82,000 sq.ft. Library in Guelph, Canada
Horizon Concrete, a distinguished Canadian construction company, has chosen MEVA Formwork Systems to provide the forming solutions for a historic library project in Guelph, Canada. Horizon, like MEVA, is a family-owned business, established in 2009 by Jerry Postma. Horizon has been utilizing MEVA systems since 2012.
The construction of the library is a key component of the Baker District redevelopment project, which is a comprehensive initiative that will also include a parking garage and public square in the downtown area, along Baker Street, Chapel, and Park Lanes. This project, with a total budget of $ 67.1 million, has been in the planning stages for a decade. It was initially approved in 2007 and finalized in September 2019, with completion scheduled for 2026. The project will involve nearly 12,500 cubic meters of concrete. The library itself will be an impressive 82,000 sq.ft., spanning three stories and two levels of underground parking.
“This is a moment for those who doubted this project‘s fruition to finally believe it,” said Guelph Public Library CEO Steve Kraft to the assembled crowd at the site in the Baker District. “Today marks the start of a new chapter in our city’s rich cultural heritage as we begin the journey to create a library space that will inspire, educate, and uplift our community for generations to come.” According to city officials, the architecture is unique, with each floor featuring different wall heights and slab changes. The city’s architects also praised the excellent concrete finish.
The decision to use both MevaLite and Mammut XT systems was based on a detailed assessment of the forming requirements for each wall. Darcy Yarascavitch, Superintendent on the project, noted that MevaLite allows workers to assemble the walls quickly by hand, eliminating downtime waiting for a crane. The STB single-sided forming solution was also employed for select walls, slabs, and columns.
We own a substantial amount of MEVA systems and appreciate their versatility and high capacity. MEVA’s Sales Representative Tamer Gerges and the MEVA team have significantly impacted Horizon, which is why we’ve partnered with them for over a decade. We‘ve tackled various projects, including big and small curved walls, huge gangs, and high-rise projects using MevaLite. The Mammut system’s built-in ties make it user-friendly and much faster than traditional wood-built forms.
