Upgrading big creek

Archer Western
To meet the high surface finish requirements for this project, the contractor wanted to refurbish their 20-year-old Imperial formwork.

The Goal

To build a large water reclamation plant with many above-grade surfaces
The operator of the plant, which already processes 24 million gallons daily (MGD) of wastewater, decided an upgrade was necessary to increase to 38MGD of water daily. The final design of the project resulted in a significant amount of exposed concrete surfaces above grade which would require a high-quality finish. To achieve the client’s goals, Archer Western wanted to refurbish their 20-year-old Imperial formwork panels.

The Project

Summary:
The new formwork was provided at an attractive price, helping to complete the works successfully, while the old formwork was refurbished, to utilize the refurbished inventory for new customers.

The Solution

Supporting Sustainable and Fit-for-purpose Solutions
Archer Western had been using their Imperial wall formwork since 2001, gradually expanding their fleet until they had over 40,000 square feet of panels. However, when they were awarded the Big Creek water reclamation project, they wanted to ensure that the specified surface finish could be achieved. As their panels were then almost 20 years old, they requested that MEVA evaluate their panels and provide an estimate for refurbishment prior to the start of the works.

After evaluating samples of the formwork, MEVA confirmed that the panels could be successfully refurbished and provided an estimated cost. As an alternative, MEVA also offered Archer Western the option to trade in their old panels for the new galvanized Imperial panels. After evaluating each offer, Archer Western chose to purchase 30,000 square feet of the new panels.

As they were able to trade in their old formwork, this helped offset the cost of buying the new equipment. Archer Western were then able to start the Big Creek project using brand new formwork that they knew would deliver the required results. As part of the deal, MEVA also provided the 3D BIM models for the structures using Revit, to help the contractor visualize and plan the formwork placement on site.

The Outcome

Archer Western were able to successfully deliver the water plant to the specified standards with their new formwork. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Imperial formwork was washed at high pressure, buffed, and repaired, including frame repairs. Once refurbished, MEVA then was able to re-use the repaired panels for new customers, providing a sustainable service.
