MAC: quick & flexible

SVG Structures

TA new hotel in downtown Perth needed an adaptable solution which could deliver the construction on time and in a busy urban location.

The Goal

To build a new, 27-storey hotel in record time
900 Hay Street Hotel will provide pleasant surroundings for visitors, located on the banks of Perth’s Swan River. The developer was keen to get the hotel completed as soon as possible.

The Project

Summary:
A 27-storey high-rise hotel building was built quickly using the MEVA Automated Climbing (MAC) system despite the site constraints.

Challenge:
The location of the building in the city centre and next to a river meant that the space on site was particularly limited. In addition, the lead time for the planning, delivery, and installation of the climbing system was also constrained.

The Solution

  1. Teamwork based on partnership
In the first instance, overcoming the challenges on this project required efficient logistical solutions. Together with JAXON Construction, the construction company SVG Structures was responsible for the formwork tasks for the new hotel and relied on close collaboration with MEVA and Novatec Formwork Systems, MEVA’s dealer in Australia to deliver solutions.

  2. Quick operations for faster construction
The MAC climbing system was used to build the high-rise core. This system saves valuable crane time through hydraulic climbing, and, thanks to the enclosed work platforms, enables construction to proceed independently of the weather conditions whilst also guaranteeing comprehensive workplace safety. This enabled the contractor to achieve quick pour cycle times and thereby reduce the construction schedule.

  3. Adaptable to bespoke requirements
As the MAC creates all the walls and shafts in the core, MEVA adapts the climbing system to the individual geometries at the construction site for every order. The Novatec team was able to implement additional requirements for this construction project on-site and coordinated the technical details with MEVA’s formwork experts. Thus, a 12-metre-high scaffold stairway was mounted on the inside of the climbing system in order to provide safe and comfortable access to the uppermost platform of the MAC from the lower slabs.

  4. Saves valuable crane time
In order to transport formwork material, tools or building materials upwards from the lower floors, a crane rail complete with lifting equipment was suspended from the MAC climbing system. It was thus possible to save the crane for other activities, and the work on the construction site was able to progress even faster.

  5. Safe follow-up works
In addition, a fully enclosed external trailing platform was installed on the MAC. This provided a safe platform from which to perform follow-up work on the storeys below during the ongoing formwork operations. For example, this allowed the exposed face of the core to have a final coating applied safely during the construction phase.

The Outcome

Despite the short lead time and confined site conditions, MEVA and Novatec were able to provide solutions that ensured the project could be delivered successfully.

The lead time for planning, delivery and installation of the climbing system was not particularly long. Furthermore, the space available on the construction site was relatively limited. Nevertheless, the experts from MEVA and Novatec supported us at all times with the best logistical and technical solutions, thus ensuring that the project was a complete success. Thanks to the MAC system, we were able to achieve quick cycle times and reduce the workload. MEVA and Novatec supported us from the installation of the MAC system right through to the end of the project and implemented all our specifications without a hitch.
